Shortly after passing through Downton on the way to Salisbury there is a sign to Matrimony Farm and I wonder if there is an interesting bit of history attached to this place?
If there is an interesting history I'm afraid that we don't have anything that mentions it. The first farm house on this site in Charlton tithing was built between 1807 and 1837 and is called Matrimony Farm on the first Ordnance Survey large scale map for this area (1886).My own suggestions for the possible origin of the name would be;
1. There may have been a marriage between two local farming families that brought together two holdings of land, necessitating the building of a new farm house.
2. It may have been built by a newly married farmer or for the newly married son of a local farmer to provide him with a livelihood.
