These pages contain information on 261 Wiltshire communities covering the whole of the Wiltshire Council administered area of the county; having been compiled by Wiltshire Libraries & Heritage. Every community page already has certain basic information, such as early maps, local administrative bodies, population from 1801, newspapers for its area, lists of local maps, the registration district, information on buildings and links to other sites of interest. Since our launch in May 2002 we have been adding much more detailed information for each community. This includes a further parish map, a brief history of the community, histories of churches and schools, a booklist, local authors and literary associations and images of old and modern photographs.
We are currently adding the full text and illustrations of over 70 key early works on Wiltshire. These can be viewed by opening Text Images in the left-hand column of this page. All original material, both archive and published, is available at the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre at Chippenham.
The 261 communities are all modern civil parishes with the exception of Imber, which has been included because of national interest. After we complete all 261 communities we will add a further 180 villages and hamlets which are distinct communities although they are part of a differently named parish.
