Welcome to the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives, Wiltshire Wills on-line catalogue!
The first stage of our on-line catalogue project provides access to a detailed catalogue of wills, 1540-1858, held in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives (also known as Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office). The catalogue also contains (for about 25% of the wills) digital images of probate records.
We are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the other organisations who have made the Wiltshire wills project possible.
We will gradually be adding further digital images of the probate records. On-line access to catalogues of other types of record is now available. However the majority of our collections (excluding the wills) can be searched on the Access to Archives website.
The Wiltshire Wills on-line is a pilot project to make our catalogue and selected digital images available on-line, with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other donors. It is currently free to view and use these images for research purposes.
Where a digital image exists, you are able to download the image and print it off yourself.
We are sorry that there is a hiatus in attaching new digital images to the on-line catalogue because of the need to develop a proposed new ‘pay per view’ system, which will be more sustainable long-term.
However, if a will does not yet have a digital image on-line, it is possible to order either a photocopy of the original or a print-out from DVD (where it is in electronic form but not on-line.) The REG wills are now all available on DVD, so it is possible to provide copies of these. You are welcome to visit us to make copies for yourself. Alternatively, there is a minimum charge of £5.00 for orders by post, excluding postage and packing. Please contact us to make your order. Orders under £20.00 will be posted together with an invoice. For orders of £20.00 and over you will be asked for payment in advance. We are now able to take payment by credit card – please contact us if you would like to use this facility.
