Description

Saxon walled town producing quantities of pottery fragments. Excavation by Jeremy Haslam. Further excavation by Wessex Archaeology in 1990.

Details

A) A walled town. The wall construction consists of a large clay bank faced in places by a well built wall of stone and mortar. Quantities of Late Saxon pottery. B) St Mary's Church is positioned immediately inside the N wall, near the North gate of the town. C) Four hundred and forty-one pottery sherds were recovered from exposed archaeological deposits of the Saxon/Norman period during topsoil stripping for a playing field in 2003. Seventeen fabric types were identified, including rim types and colour. Most appeared to represent moderate sized cooking pots, although others demonstrated that there was a general increase in size throughout the period of time. Narrow handmade tall cooking pots in a generally coarse limestone fabric suggests that a potter's workshop was set-up in or near to the town early in its existance. A few storage jars, pitchers, cups and pans were also represented. Animal bones were also collected.
