Description

Medieval settlement of Devizes which had Norman castle. Town defences excavated 1974. Outer bailey excavated 1991 and seen during a watching brief in 1999.

Details

A)Devizes is Divisas in AD 1135. B)Medieval settlement originating from castle. C) Devizes has two churches of Norman date. The town defences were excavated in 1974 by J Haslam. The 1991 excavation of outer bailey uncovered the ditch, again seen in 1999 evaluation.
