Search Keyword - Search the SMR database using 1-2 clear and concise words. (e.g. "hillfort", "Bronze", etc.)
Combine the "Search Keyword" with the following categories to narrow and refine your results
Parish - Search the SMR database by the name of the Wiltshire parish the SMR is located in.
Period - Search the SMR database by the time period which the finds discovered at the SMR are from. (Time periods are described in more detail below)
Site Type - Search the SMR database by the type of site the SMR is classed. (e.g. "Castle", "Standing Stones", etc.)
SMR Number - Search the SMR database by the SMR number of the site.
Finds - Search the SMR database by the type of finds located at the SMR site. (e.g. "Brass", "Worked Flint", etc.)
Once you have filled in the search details, you can choose to organise your results by:
Once you have searched for and located your desired SMR, click on the SMR Number of the site to visit detailed information on the SMR. From this page you can see details on the site location, as well as brief descriptions of the findings at the site.
You can view detailed OS maps of the site with Localview, or aerial photographs using the "Satellite" imagery of Google Maps.
From the map screen, the area not covered by a green overlay is the county of Wiltshire.
The map can be moved by pressing the hand icon 
, then dragging the map around, or by using the arrows located at the edge of the map. You can zoom either by clicking on the zoom control icons 
, the clicking on the map, or by using the zoom scale in the top right of the map.
Archaeological sites listed in the SMR database are depicted by red outlines, for example;
Once you have found the area or site you are looking for, click the pin icon 
, then click the area on the map you wish to target.
Further help is available form the map page itself.
After this, you can either choose to either "View the Nearest", which will give you the SMR number of the site closest to the pin, or you can view sites "In the Area", which allows you to form a list of sites within up to a 1.5 mile radius from the pin. If you choose "In the Area", you will be taken to a new page. Please click the "Sites and Monuments Records" button on the left-hand side to access the list of sites.
From these pages, you can click the site’s name to view detailed information, or click "Locate" to centre them on the map. Contact information for the ‘Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre’ can be found on the site pages.
