I am looking into the history of Norborne Berkeley, who owned land in the parishes of Stapleton and Stoke Gifford in South Gloucestershire. His mother was Elizabeth Norborne, whose first marriage was to Edward Devereaux, first viscount Hereford. According to records, Elizabeth Norborne's family camefrom Calne in Wiltshire. Are you able to say from indexes whether any of your libraries might have any information about the Norborne family?

Is there any info available re the Calne Union Workhouse in Yatesbury, Wiltshire? My Collier family had lived and worked there as farm labourers in the 1851 Census. I have not been able to trace them after this census. How long was the Workhouse in operation? Did they keep birth / death records of the residents? I would appreciate any data you may have of this workhouse. Thank you

My project is to research the history of the Canterbury Public Library Service ~ at The Beeney Institute built 1899 and its predecessors. The story has been traced back to Canterbury's Friendly Society for the Cultivation of Useful Knowledge which was started in 1769 by John Callaway (1737-1807). Details of this Canterbury Society are pretty sketchy and I was interested to come across the Calne Society for the Cultivation of Useful Knowledge dating from 1834(?). Can you please let me have an indication of how much information you have about the Calne Society?
