I am interested in the history of the Vikings but wondered if they ever reached Salisbury. I have lots of information about when they were in York and the north but it made me think about which other British towns and cities they occupied. If you have any general information I would be most grateful as I have found very little on the Internet.

Is there any info available re the Calne Union Workhouse in Yatesbury, Wiltshire? My Collier family had lived and worked there as farm labourers in the 1851 Census. I have not been able to trace them after this census. How long was the Workhouse in operation? Did they keep birth / death records of the residents? I would appreciate any data you may have of this workhouse. Thank you

When I was a child I used to visit Lowden Manor garden in Chippenham and have always wondered about the large mound in the garden. It was probably 25 to 30 ft high with a group of trees on top (beeches?) and steps with a handrail to the top. I have wondered since that it might be prehistoric and altered in Victorian times as part of a garden re-design. Or spoil from the railway that passes within yards. Or indeed the missing Norman motte?
