I understand that the Byways Guest House, no. 31 Fowler's Road, was built in 1886 for the Cripps family, who were grocers in Catherine Street, and was known as Hillbrow. In Thomas Hardy's “Far from the madding crowd” there is reference to the barracks where Sergeant Troy is quartered, as being on 'the outskirts of a certain town and military station, many miles north of Weatherbury'. Have you any idea where this might be?

My Grandmother, Eveline Louise Blencowe, was born at the Castle Hotel Devizes in 1881. As a child I heard her speak about some land they owned (rented) called Newlands and I remember seeing old photos of a beautiful meadow. There was some talk of their being a grve in it. Can anyone recall anthing about Newlands. I imagine it has now been covered with housing.

Many years ago I emigrated from Devizes to Canada and recently I saw a T.V. programme here on Devizes. It was about a planned revolt by German prisoners of war in 1944. I wondered if anyone has written a book or article on the planned revolt?

My mother was born in Bulkington nr Devizes. I've never been able to locate any information on the history of Bulkington or the pub in which she was born and lived in as a child. Do you have any information on the hamlet and/or the pub? I know the pub was called the Bell Inn and has since been changed.

One of my ancestors Robert Fulloway, is believed to have come from around Devizes, he was born approx 1823, then sometime in between he moved to Droitwich, Worcestershire, where he married in 1846. His marriage certificate states that his father was James Fulloway a labourer, but I can not find any records of his existence. I have noted that there was a place named Fullaway, now taken into the area known as All Cannings, I wondered if there were any records etc that I could access?

Could you please give me more details about the highwayman who was hanged on hill off the Devizes/Beckhampton road? My grandfather or great-grandfather told how, as a boy, he ran from his home in Mildenhall to see the man on the gallows. There is still a gravestone at the side of the road.
