Independent Chapel, Dauntsey

The earliest recorded non-conformist chapel in the parish dates from 18th October 1798, when the lower room in the house of labourer Peter Haward was licensed for Independent worship. Another Independent license was granted on 21st March 1816, for the house of Thomas Skull, who was a shoemaker; and another the following year when the house of John Merrot, labourer, was allowed for independent worship. An Independent chapel was built at Dauntsey Common in 1824 or 1825 and on the morning of Census Sunday in 1851 there is a record of 22 people attending their service.
