Question:
Was there a pond at the bottom of High Street hill in Wootton Bassett, and if so when was it filled in?

Answer:
According to the 1899 map of Wootton Bassett, a small pond is shown at the bottom of High Street Hill near the junction of Whitehill Lane.

This pond is now no longer in existence, although it is unclear when it was filled in. Houses now stand on the site, and prior to that a local resident can remember two tin bungalows which used to house railway workers in the early part of the twentieth century existing on the site, suggesting the pond was filled in shortly after the 1899 map was produced.
