Question:
I am looking to obtain a copy of the Charter for Wootton Bassett. Could you tell me if it is available on line or in book form and from where I could get said copy.

Answer:
There seem to be 2 charters for Wootton Bassett, both late ones. The town is said to have received a charter of priviliges in 1446 (John Aubrey) but there does not seem to be any other evidence for this. There is a 17th century copy of a reputed charter of 1561 and this is in the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office (G26/100/1) while in 1679 there was a Charter of Incorporation from Charles II, which confirmed all earlier charters and the existing corporation. This is in the Public Record Office (C66/3209 no.19) but there is a copy in the Wiltshire Record Office (G26/100/2) In 1571 there was also a charter granting a market and two fairs.
