Is Cocklebury Lane haunted? Yy two children said that they have they have heard stories of a lady in grey walking down Cocklebury Lane at night. if this is the case, then who was she?

In 'Ghosts and Legends of the Wiltshire Countryside' (1985) Kathleen Wiltshire relates the following about the Wroughtons of Wilcot Manor. Anne was wrongly accused of infidelity by her husband and turned out into the snow on Christmas Eve. She started to walk towards Cocklebury but her frozen body was found by the track on Christmas morning. A former schoolmaster of Oare was convinced that he saw 'the White Lady of Wilcot'.

The Wroughton family owned Wilcot Manor from 1572 when Sir Thomas and Anne Wroughton were in residence. However Sir Thomas died in 1597 and Anne in 1610. There may have been a later Anne at the manor but to my mind the story sounds pure Victorian melodrama and I feel that it probably originated in the 19th century.
