Question:
I wondered if you are able to explain the origin of the village Stowell near Alton Priors and how it got its name please.

Answer:
The meaning of Stowell is said to be a spring or stream with an edging of sarsen stone. In this location I think that it was more likely to have been a spring. There was a village at East Stowell by the mid 13th century and I think that West Stowell is older. The name is Saxon and there was a Romano-British building at West Stowell.
