Question:
Can you tell me anything about Bromham House which was destroyed during the Civil War? I believe a smaller house called Spye House was built at Spye Park, using some of the remains of the original building.

Answer:
Bromham House was destroyed in 1654. The new Spye Park house was built on the same site & stood until 1858. A new red brick mansion was then built 200 yards from the old house & as soon as the new house was completed, the old one was knocked down. On 8th August 1974 the new house caught fire. One wing was rescued but the rest was burnt out. The family continued to live in the one wing, but a few years later substantial dry rot was discovered. They moved into the stable block & the red brick mansion was demolished.
