Note 1

In the Oxford Times 20th January 1928 p 10: Upper Thames Folk Songs – extract, Williams writes:

I remember being show a list of folks songs collected in the southern and western counties several years ago. Out of that number Somersetshire was credited with 300, and Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire with three each.

I thought it was a pity, because it was along way from the truth. As a matter of fact, almost the whole of the songs might have been obtained between Oxford and Cricklade; they were quite as popular in this locality as they were in Somersetshire. Of course, the songs were hardly ever local. A few were, undoubtedly, and there were local rhymes such as “Benny and the butter” and “The Fly upon the turnip”. But even these were disputed, often being claimed for several counties. Generally speaking they may be left out of the reckoning and being too crude and too recent.

Note 2

There is no copy of this in the manuscripts. Following in the footsteps of the compliers of the Bathe Clissold Index I have given this song the number X.807 for continuity.

Transcribed and edited by Chris Wildridge, 2011.
