Song Lyrics
Joe the Sweep

A thigh for the stocking, a foot for the shoe,
And a leg for the bonny green garter.
Print Song Lyrics
Note 1

Williams, Alfred: Ms: 'Morris jingle.'

Note 2

The manuscript is a modern transcription from the Notebook, page 12, which adds, 'presumably Oxfordshire'. It is probably be the Morris refrain to the Bampton dance tune.

Note 3

In the notes to Oh! Once they said my lip was red, OX 215, the manuscript refers to three fragments, WGS and FSUT to two. The first Morris fragment is When moggy by the fire sat. The third piece cannot be identified with certainty but may well be this piece, 'Bonny green garters', Ox 226, a well known set of words to the Bampton tune.

Transcribed and edited by Chris Wildridge, 2010.
