Song Lyrics
Verse 1

'Twas early one morning I chanced for to stray,
I saw a lovely lassie come tripping that way;
With her cheeks red as roses, she gaily did sing,
With a bonny, blue handkerchief tied under her chin.

Verse 2

"Oh! Why is this handkerchief tied under your head?"
"It's our country fashion, kind sir," she said.
"And the fashion you know sir, I like to be in,
With the bonny, blue handkerchief tied under my chin."

Verse 3

Then for to kiss her I tried to begin,
"Oh, stop, sir," she said, "While I tell you one thing.
He that kisses these lips must show a gold ring,
For the bonny, blue handkerchief tied under my chin."

Verse 4

With gold and with silver I tried all in vain,
But she smiled in my face with scornful disdain -
"It is not your gold, sir, that one kiss shall win,
From this bonny, blue handkerchief tied under my chin."

Verse 5

When I saw her so loyal I could not forbear,
I fell in her arms and called her my dear;
"Oh, my dearest jewel! Here is the gold ring,
For the bonny, blue handkerchief tied under your chin."
Print Song Lyrics
Williams, Alfred: Ms / WGS: 'This is not so old as many in our list. I am told it dates from about the middle of the last century. I have seen a larger copy, but this is all that was used here, as I can, with certainty speak. Obtained of David Sawyer, late of Ogbourne, Wiltshire.'

Transcribed and edited by Chris Wildridge, 2010.
