Song Lyrics
Verse 1

Jonathon and William they went to town together,
William he had learning and Jonathon he had leather;
Says William to Jonathon, "And what can you do?"
Says Jonathon to William, "I can mend your shoe,"

With my leather, lapstone, hammers, nippers,
Pincers, peg and awl, and brussel.

Verse 2

Says Jonathon to William, "Pray what is your intention?"
Then William spoke to Jonathon above his comprehension,
Says William to Jonathon, "And what can you do?"
Says Jonathon to William, "I can mend your shoe."

Print Song Lyrics
Note 1

Williams, Alfred: Ms / WGS: 'The following interesting fragments of songs [also Poor fisherboy] I discovered at Brinkworth. They are all old, and have been popular in their time. Words supplied by Jonathon Cole, the aged gamekeeper.'

Note 2

There are minor differences in punctuation between Ms and WGS.

Note 3

The published version of this song only has the name of the town as Malmesbury as a note. The words are identical to those given in the manuscript as being collected from Jonathon Cole of Brinkworth. The only difference is that the manuscript contains a chorus.

Transcribed and edited Chris Wildridge, 2010.
