Death after fall downstairs

A nonagenarian

A verdict of accidental death was returned by Mr. H. House, Coroner for the Stroud Division, at an inquest at Cirencester last Friday on Mr. Eli Jasper Price, aged 91, of Upper Up, South Cerney, whose death was reported in our last issue.

Having been told by a daughter of the deceased how she had found her father injured at the bottom of the stairs one morning, the Coroner said that he was satisfied that Mr. Price had accidently fallen down the stairs.

The daughter, Mrs. Esther Louisa Davies, of Upper Up, South Cerney, told the Coroner that her father lived alone. She looked after him, visiting him daily. She described how, on visiting her father at 8 a.m. on Tuesday Nov. 18, she found him in a sitting position at the bottom of the stairs. He was conscious but said that he could not remember what had happened.

Dr. E. J. Guest [Cirencester] said that when he saw Mr. Price about half an hour later, he was suffering from very severe shock and had cuts and bruises on his head and body, consistent with having fallen down the stairs. Death was due to heart failure and shock, accelerated by the fall. The doctor said that Mr. Price was a very “independent man” and had always refused to go into hospital. His eyesight had become much poorer of late and his hearing was not good.

Sister Martha Kay said that Mr. Price died at Watermoor Hospital in the early hours of Nov. 19.

Life-long resident

Mr. Price was born in South Cerney and had lived in the village the whole of his life. In his younger days he was employed as a farm worker but in later years worked on the sewage disposal works at Shorncote.

A widower for over 40 years, he leaves a family of nine children, six sons and three daughters. Of the sons, Charles and William are now living in Yorkshire, Frank in London, John in Essex and two, Eli and Ernest at South Cerney. Two daughters, Mrs. Gassor and Mrs. Washington are living at Aylesbury and the third, Mrs. Davies at South Cerney.

The funeral took place at South Cerney Parish Church on Monday, conducted by the Rev.G Waddington-Jones.

Wreaths were received from Frank, Min and family; Eliza and family; Eli and Polly; Ernie and Lil; Louie and Charlie; John and Alice; Bill, Anne and family; Lil, Mike and grandchildren; Ron and Keith; Nora, Maurice, Frank and Alma; David and Charlie; Neices and Nephews; Mrs. Harding; Mr. and Mrs. W.
