NotesIt was standing, fifteen feet high, thirty six years ago [written in 1826]. The higher part of it was cut off at the request of Madam Heath, before whose house and the Trooper, it stood. I once myself saw the 'morris dance' round it , when cowslips, oxslips, and other flowers were suspended up and down it: nails were driven round the lower part to prevent further incision. The maypole was noted at Clack, a hamlet, Every Day Book, Hone, Vol II 804
