The late 18th century milestone is made of limestone and has a cast iron plate informing the traveller that it is 5 miles to Wincanton and 9 to Hindon. It stands on the Mere to Wincanton road that was turnpiked (given to a private company by Act of Parliament under which the company undertook to maintain it and were allowed to charge tolls for its use) in 1754-6. |
