This business was started by Charles Card in 1814 for the provision of tea, groceries and general goods. In 1864 it was taken over by Walton and Child but within a few years John Walton was running a very successful business by himself and the company concurrently occupied several premises in the town over the next few decades. In 1907 they are listed as being family drapers, tailors, grocers, ironmongers, furniture dealers and removers, carpet warehousemen, glass, china and earthenware dealers, bacon curers, cheese factors and a post office. There were branches at Maiden Bradley, Zeals, Bourton and Wincanton. The cabinet making business, with which this early solid tyre lorry was connected, was based at Wincanton. Waltons were Mere's very own department store. |
