In 1884 Elizabeth Utterson left five cottages in Lowden; four of them were to provide accommodation for elderly women and the fifth, the middle one, to provide accommodation for the custodian, who looked after the five houses and the chapel. She also left an annuity of £1,797.15.0d (£1,797.75) at 3%, the income of which was to be used by the minister for the upkeep of the houses and to provide a sum not exceeding 3 shillings and sixpence (17.5 pence) to each of the inhabitants.
