The Duke Inn was built from between 1850-1860 and replaced the Duke of Wellington Inn which had been inappropriately located next to the old church tower. The Inn was and still is a popular public house. The old stables and 'Arkell's' brewery buildings are still to be seen today. It is rumoured that tunnels once ran from the inn to the well at Fairmead.
