In 1773 (Andrews and Dury's Map), and earlier, the pond was the focal point of the village. Early village houses were clustered around it and ones from the 17th and 18th centuries remain. From 1807 there was a crossroads here formed by the Shaftesbury to Ringwood road, the road to Berwick St. John, and a new road to Tollard Green. The area of the pond has been landscaped and, with its benges, provides a pleasant picnic site.
