Notes
Williams’ article on Old-time customs of North Wilts contains the following:

“There was no lack of versions of the Mummers’ Play in the neighbourhood of Swindon. And very good copies at that. The one of Robin Hood and Little John, in my book, “Round About the Upper Thames”, was popular at Highworth and Inglesham. I found another copy at Shaw, in 1915 – a really perfect copy of Saint George and the Turkish Knight. Faringdon had another copy figuring Father Christmas and the Royal Russian King. None of these were written out; but they circulated in oral tradition.”
