Durrington - Upper Avon School, Durrington

Until 1922 all children aged from 7 up to 14 were educated in the same school. In 1922 a senior school for children aged over 11 was opened in Bulford Road. In 1944, in line with government policy, this became a secondary modern school. In the 1950s the number of pupils was increasing and a larger building was needed. This was built at the north-eastern corner of the village in Recreation Road, at a cost of £118,732. The school opened on September 7th 1959 and had accommodation for 480 pupils. In the early 1970s extensive additions were made to the school buildings, and in 1974 the school became a comprehensive, being known as Upper Avon School.

As a comprehensive school the age range of pupils was from 11 to 18 and by 1992 there were 746 students at the school. In 1994 41% of the 732 at the school came from families in the armed forces while there was a changeover of 25% of pupils every year owing to postings and relocations. There were seven principle feeder schools, Durrington Junior, Larkhill Primary, Figheldean Primary, Bulford Kiwi Primary, Netheravon Primary, Bulford Haig Primary, and Bulford C. of E. Primary. Students from Stonehenge Comprehensive School at Amesbury could join the 6th form at age 16. In 2000 the percentage of children from army families had fallen to between 35% and 40% of the 731 students. There were 613 students in 2004.
